Help Advance Our Goals: Volunteer With Us
Join us to spread the "Bite Me Cancer" attitude, and help us continue to achieve our ongoing goals! You can make a positive impact for teenagers battling all cancers and also help us directly expand research opportunities for thyroid cancer treatments.
We are an all-volunteer organization so each person is needed and valued!
Board of Directors
Our board of directors is a very dedicated and passionate group of individuals who make a 1-year commitment that can be renewed. The board of directors is responsible for the strategic and financial direction of the foundation. Each board member also participates on a committee. It's important that each board member makes a commitment to help Bite Me Cancer especially because we are an all-volunteer organization. For 2024, the board will meet every other month in a hybrid set up.
Communication Committee
Help us tell our story! The Communications team raises awareness of our events and initiatives. Specific activities within this committee include website updates, social media plans and posts, press releases, branding, messaging, graphic designs for brochures/posters/flyers, distribution of news to the public, and support materials for events. Volunteers may also attend 3rd party events or cancer-related conferences to promote Bite Me Cancer.
Teen Support Committee
This team oversees the activities related to supporting teenagers battling cancer. The Teen Support Bags program is the largest part of the committee’s work which includes assembling the Teen Support Bags, coordinating volunteer groups needed for the bag stuffing events, managing the inventory of the bag items, reaching out to hospitals to maintain relationships, and finding new hospital partners. This team also plans for our dinner deliveries to the INOVA Children’s Pediatric/Oncology Unit every few months. Also, this committee is in charge of our in-person events for teens with cancer (and their families/friends).
Wine Dinner Committee
Our annual wine dinner (titled "It's In the Bag!") is our biggest fundraiser event of the year. This committee entails approximately a 6-month commitment that focuses on all of the planning for our annual wine dinner. There are a variety of roles and activities available for volunteers to help including: logistics for setting up what’s needed with the venue, registration database/ticket work, coordination of the silent auction, marketing/graphics, social media/PR ideas, budgeting, etc. During the 6-month period, a conference call once a month is set up with the team. Participation is also available for our meal tasting, dessert tasting, and wine tasting events to choose the items for our wine dinner. (Photo is from the last wine tasting event!)
Finance and Operations Committee
This committee ensures Bite Me Cancer is running in a fiduciary, legal and operationally-sound manner. The annual budget and monthly updates are the Finance and Operation team’s main responsibilities. Also, anything related to legal topics, banking/investments, office management/communications, copyright issues, bylaws, and some strategic subjects are managed through this committee.
